The article below by Max Presnell was published in the Sydney Morning Herald on the 5th of June. It provides an insight into just some of the statistical information in our Virtual FormGuide available to Cyberhorse Racing Club Members.

WINNERS & LOSERS

FIGURES can be misleading, but the winning strike rates of trainers Lee Freedman and Gai Waterhouse are commendable. Trainers can be flash for a short period, but Freedman and Waterhouse have been consistent for the past three seasons.

For instance, Freedman is running at a 25 per cent win rate so far this season, following 20.5 per cent for the previous 12 months and 21.4 per cent in 2003-2004, according to statistics from Virtual Form Guide.

For the same period, Waterhouse has produced 23.5 per cent, 19.7 per cent and 19.2 per cent.

Freedman and Waterhouse take out the quinella of best percentages with considerable runners.

Fewer starters give trainers the opportunity to shine but Freedman and Waterhouse, in particular, have fielded more than the 600 runners required for a reasonable sample.

Surprisingly, John Hawkes doesn't score more highly, but for the current season he had 1491 starters compared to Freedman's 792 and Waterhouse's 778. He has had more winners, but at 14.6 per cent.

David Hayes has had the most starters this season, 1520, but at a 14.5 per cent winning rate. The rising light in the mass production category, Peter Moody, is improving with his winning percentage at 22.9, following 15.8, and 19.9.

Until this season, Waterhouse had topped 1000 runners for the previous two years while Hawkes is the top marker of recent times with 2063 starters in 2003-2004.
